First time at a Hindu Wedding

A quick guide

Many of our guests will be seeing a Hindu ceremony for the first time, so here's a quick cheat sheet.

First, the Baraat. The groom dances his way in, surrounded by drums, music and his wedding party, so get ready to clap, cheer and dance along. His family and friends will be invited to join the procession once they arrive at The Calyx.

The ceremony itself takes place beneath a mandap, a four-pillared canopy that represents the home the couple is building together. It's a sacred, sheltered space for the vows and rituals that follow.

Five Key Elements of the Ceremony

01

Exchanging Garlands

Medha & Jacob place flower garlands on one another, an early "yes" to the marriage.

02

Holding Hands, Sacred Promises

Hands are joined as the couple makes their vows to one another.

03

The Seven Steps

Seven steps taken together, each one a shared promise for their life ahead.

04

Standing on the Millstone

A symbol of strength and steady footing for whatever life brings.

05

Offering Puffed Rice

Rice is offered into the sacred fire for a prosperous life together.
